Install Framio on your computer
Install Framio on macOS, Windows, or Linux. Understand early-release security warnings, capture permissions, and in-app updates.
Updated
A few minutes of setup, then your first screenshot. Framio’s early Mac releases are not notarized by Apple, and Windows installers do not have a verified publisher. Your computer may ask you to review the app before it opens. The wording depends on your operating system and security settings.
Start with the official download
Go to framio.app/download and choose your computer. Official installer files are served from releases.framio.app. If there is no published installer for your platform, leave your email on the download page to hear when it is available.
Follow the steps below only for a download you deliberately obtained from Framio and trust. An unfamiliar-developer warning is different from an alert reporting malware or a damaged file. If you are unsure, stop and ask us before opening it.
Install on a Mac
In the Apple menu, open About This Mac. Choose Apple Silicon for an Apple M-series chip or Intel for an Intel processor. These early builds are not notarized by Apple, so macOS may be unable to verify the developer or check the app for malicious software.
If your Mac offers a per-app exception and you trust your download, use this sequence. The option may be unavailable on a work or school computer.
- Open the downloaded .dmg file and drag Framio into Applications.
- Open Framio from Applications. If macOS blocks it as an unverified app, dismiss the alert without opening it.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security. Find the entry for Framio in the Security area.
- Choose Open Anyway if it is offered for Framio, then confirm the next prompt. Authenticate if macOS asks.
Install on Windows
Download the Windows x64 installer and open it. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may display “Windows protected your PC.” An unsigned installer may also be labeled “Unknown publisher.” A warning is not a guarantee that a file is safe or unsafe; check its source before deciding.
For the ordinary SmartScreen prompt, these steps apply only when Windows offers the choice and you trust the Framio file you downloaded. If there is no option to continue, use the blocked-installation advice below.
- Choose More info to review the app and publisher details.
- If you trust this download and Windows offers Run anyway, select it for this installer.
- Follow the installer. If Windows requests permission to make changes, confirm the file is the Framio installer before approving. Some installation choices require an administrator.
If your computer blocks installation
Windows Smart App Control can block an unsigned app without offering a per-app exception. Work and school policies can also prevent installation. Leave those protections on; contact us or your administrator rather than changing device-wide security settings.
If an alert reports malware, says the app will harm your computer, or identifies a damaged or modified file, do not continue through it. Report the exact wording and download source to us. For a damaged download, we may ask you to download a fresh copy; repeated failures need investigation.
Install on Linux
Download the Linux x64 AppImage. In your file manager, open its properties or permissions and allow this file to run as a program, then open it. The setting’s name varies by desktop.
If it does not launch, send us your distribution, desktop environment, and the error. AppImage runtime requirements vary across distributions; do not assume an installation command intended for another system will help.
Allow screen capture when you need it
On macOS, enable Framio under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, sometimes called Screen & System Audio Recording. Restart Framio if requested. This permission is separate from the first-open security decision.
On Linux, your desktop may show a screen-sharing chooser or permission prompt. You can open an existing image and annotate it without granting display-capture access.
What to expect when updating
Open About & updates in Framio, check for a new version, and download it. Save your image edits before installing. Follow the installation prompts and restart when Framio offers it; on Windows the app hands over to the installer.
Framio checks an update’s cryptographic signature before installation. This verifies that it was signed with the updater key the installed app trusts. It does not provide Apple notarization, a Microsoft verified publisher, or a malware scan. Operating system prompts or blocks may still apply to a new version.
If downloading or signature verification fails, Framio does not install that update. Retry the download. If the error persists, contact us; do not disable verification or follow instructions to turn off antivirus protection.
Other projects with similar installation notes
Flameshot, the open-source screenshot tool, documents macOS first-open blocks for builds without an Apple certificate. LibreWolf, the Firefox-based browser, says its macOS builds are not notarized and explains the resulting Gatekeeper friction. LibreWolf’s Windows downloads are signed, so the Mac example does not apply to every platform.
These are examples of how other projects document installation, not endorsements of Framio or evidence that a particular download is safe. Signing policies change; the linked project documentation is the source for each example.
Still stuck?
Send us your operating system version, Framio version, download source, and the exact warning or error. A screenshot of the dialog helps too. Leave out passwords, recovery codes, and other private information.
Keep your computer’s security protections enabled. Use a per-app choice only when your system offers it and you trust the download; a blocked or suspicious file is a reason to pause and ask for help.
